There are two reasons why I love The Last Five Years. The first is I hate happiness, and the second is Jason Robert Brown’s brilliance. It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve listened to this CD, when the end comes around I am absolutely devastated. I’m pretty sure if the story had been played out in a linear fashion, it would still break me, just because these characters and their story is so organic and real, playing on what can strain any relationship. But in seeing Cathy’s story backwards, as she goes from heartbreak to utter joy, just makes everything worse. However, despite all this, I will continue to listen and adore this show because Jason Robert Brown writes so intricately and fantastically. These songs are so beautiful, I cannot keep myself away. And Sherie and Norbert sound so good, making this one of my favorite cast recordings, I’m pretty sure. As sad as I am every time I listen, it’s so good I just want to listen again and again.

tl;dr, Jason Robert Brown is a life ruiner.
